Developing Individuality in the Human Brain: A Tribute to Michael I. Posner

Developing Individuality in the Human Brain: A Tribute to Michael I. Posner
DEVELOPING INDIVIDUALITY IN THE HUMAN BRAIN describes the breadth of Michael I. Posner's influence on the field of cognitive, affective, and developmental neurosciences. In this volume, leading scientists explore the topics that are central to Posner's work, such as the power of componential analysis to uncover critical cognitive functions, how brain images can be used to test psychological theories of distinct cognitive functions, and how individual and developmental differences can be traced to differences in basic neuro-cognitive functions across people and developmental stages. This thoughtful collection of essays deftly illustrates how Posner's examination of elementary processes has moved the field toward a fundamental level of understanding about human cognition. Primary audience: Cognitive neuroscientists, neuro-psychologists, cognitive psychologists. Secondary audience: development psychologists.

Cognitive Development by John H. Flavell,
Cognitive Development by John H. Flavell,
Cutting-edge and "big-picture" in perspective, this popular introduction to cognitive development focuses on both the fascinating nature of children's thinking and the excitement and change in work in this area. Using an integrated topical approach, it explores the developmental aspects of social cognition, perception, memory, and language. Theoretically balanced, it considers the full spectrum of approaches--from Piaget's developmental stages, to information-processing (including connectionism), dynamic systems, contextual, theory-change, neo-Piagetian, evolutionary, neuroscience, and constraint approaches. Infant Perception. Infant Cognition. Representation and Concepts. Reasoning and Problem Solving. Social Cognition/Theory of Mind. Memory. Language. For anyone interested in child development, including parents, students, and those in psychology, social work, education, etc.

Formal operational stage - The Formal Operational stage is the fourth and final of the stages of cognitive development of Piaget's theory. This stage, which follows the Concrete Operational stage, commences at about 12 years of age and continues into adulthood.

Concrete Operational stage - The concrete operational stage is the third of four stages of cognitive development in Piaget's theory. This stage, which follows the Preoperational stage and occurs from the ages of 7 to 12, is characterized by the appropriate use of logic.

Preoperational stage - The Preoperational stage is the second of four stages of cognitive development theorized in Piaget's theory. By observing sequences of play, Piaget was able to demonstrate that towards the end of the second year a qualitatively quite new kind of psychological functioning occurs.

Concrete operational stage - The concrete operational stage is one of four main stages within Piaget's model for cognitive development. According to Piaget it begins at approximately age 7 or 8 and is normally completed by age 11.
