Jean Piaget and Stage of Development

'Do children have anything to teach teachers? Jean Piaget believes that they do. As a beginning teacher, I focused on elaborate preparation of explanations and demonstrations on content. To piaget and his co-workers I owe a special debt for their ingeneous methods of exploring children's thinking and their theory of intellectual development. A study of Piaget's work, together with direct observations of children, has been instrumental in my transition to another stage of development as a teacher.

Something is supposed to happen during the adolescent years--something greater than MTV, video games, and the Internet. Joseph Chilton Pearce describes this something as the natural mandate for post-biological development--the development of the sexual and spiritual senses and expansion of our growth process outside of our bodies and into the physical world that surrounds us. Jean Piaget - Jean Piaget (August 9, 1896–September 16, 1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist, famous for his work with children and his theory of cognitive development.

Conservation (psychology) - An ability in logical thinking according to the psychologist Jean Piaget who developed four stages in cognitive development. By the third stage, the Concrete operational stage, the child of age 7-11 has mastered this ability, to logically determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustment of the container, shape, or apparent size.

Preoperational stage - The Preoperational stage is the second of four stages of cognitive development theorized in Piaget's theory. By observing sequences of play, Piaget was able to demonstrate that towards the end of the second year a qualitatively quite new kind of psychological functioning occurs.

Concrete operational stage - The concrete operational stage is one of four main stages within Piaget's model for cognitive development. According to Piaget it begins at approximately age 7 or 8 and is normally completed by age 11.
